The possible functions for speciality chemicals are numerous: anti-oxidant, anti-microbial (more specifically anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungi but also anti-algae effects), fluorescence, complex forming (chelates, sequestings agents, bioremediation of polluted land), ion exchange resins, anti-fouling, anti-scaling, radical scavengers, flame retardants, UV-stabilisers, lubricants, coatings, slow release, binding (adhesion, agglomeration), surfactants (emulsification, dispersion, foaming and anti-foaming, flocculants), absorption and adsorption (products with naturally high active surface, or that are artificially improved like biomass derived active carbons).

Most of these functions are natural properties used by nature to help the living beings to better survive in a hostile environment where such functions have to be efficient as protective mechanisms. One of the interests of lignin based products is to combine several of these functions in one molecule, as it is the case for lignin in nature.
